This is Monday morning (boring as usual) and
the trains are house-full. Thousands of Mumbai citizens take the Mumbai local
train to reach to their work places. The trains are full packed (especially the
ones coming towards the town). Most of them are busy reading newspapers, some
preparing for their meetings, some are busy talking to their bosses on the
phone and some are convincing the clients, some even busy chanting bhajans.
The train is also a good place for people selling jewellery items, cosmetics, some house-hold items and also fruits and vegetables.
Everybody is busy and no one
has the time to look at the others. This is one place where you find all the
citizens, irrespective of their religion, caste and colour. Everyone is busy
reaching their places.
When you come out of the train, you see a long line
waiting to cross the bridge (especially the Parel bridge- it is too small for
the number of people everyday travelling to their offices).
When you come out of the
station you see a number of people standing in the queues to get their share
cabs, rickshaws and some long stretching lines waiting for the buses.
Some are busy having their
breakfast on the stalls, some are getting it packed to have it in the office.
All day long, working hard
throughout the day, listen to your bosses (also when it is not yor fault, basically they have had it from their bosses), listening to the clients, not so co-operative co-workers, telephone rings buzzing, queueing of emails, no time for lunch, tea is sometimes missed and the line goes on.
After a tiring day at work, everybody runs towards their home, catching cabs, trains
and buses. In the trains you see busy ladies, buying vegetables and fruits for
their home and men are as usual discussing sports. (Nowadays, you don’t find
ladies talking about television serials anymore).
People rush home to try and
spend some quality time with their family and friends, a little time for some
dinner and then rushing back to bed because next day morning they again have to
rush back to offices.
This is how an Average
Mumbaikar spends his/her day throughout the week. (we often get Sundays as
holidays and that we usually spend sleeping).
