Ramzan is the 9th month of the Islamic calendar. The term Ramzan in Arabic means scorching heat or dryness. It was established as the holy month for Muslims after the Holy Qura'n was revealed on Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him) on the auspicious night called Laylat-ul-Qadr (night of power). The Laylat-ul-Qadr is observed on the 21st/23rd/25th/27th and 29th night of the Ramzan as it is believed that any of these nights may be Laylat-ul-Qadr.
The Daily Fasting Requirements of Ramzan
At dawn, Muslims begin their day with having their food after which they start with their fast and pray the morning prayers (Fajr Namaz). The day is spent as usual with people carrying on with their daily chores and work along with praying (Zohar prayers in the afternoon and Asr prayers in the evening). The fast is broken at sunset time (Iftar) with family and friends together. The norm is that they will listen to the "Call for Maghrib Prayers" (sunset prayers) and will break their fast with dates (considered auspicious and healthy as well). People gorge on some delicious delicacies and sweets and set go for their sunset (Maghrib) Prayers.
At the night prayers (Isha Namaz), with the usual 17 rakats of Namaz, 20 more rakats of Namaz of Taravih are added, especially for the month of Ramzan. During Taravih, the men recite the Aayats of the Holy Qura'n. The day ends with the dinner which is taken light in quantity.
Every Muslim is required to recite the Holy Qura'n atleast once in the month of Ramzan. Charity (Zakaat) is mandatory in the month of Ramzan, on people who possess certain amount of gold/cash/property. Cash is given to people in need with the purpose of charity, and people donate open-heartedly during this month.
Everybody is excited, especially young boys and girls, because they get to spend lavishly on food and clothes, spend on their shopping. Young ones receive "Eidi" from their elders as a token of appreciation for observing fast for the whole month.
Ramzan is said to purify you body, mind and soul, hence, it is advisable for people from every faith to observe fast, atleast a day every week to purify themselves.
